AMES, Iowa? Both Ashley Kent and Ceilia Maccani had arguably their best campaigns for the Iowa State gymnastics team in what originally was planned to be their final year as Cyclones. However, season-ending injuries early in both Kent's and Maccani's careers at ISU gave them the opportunity to compete in 2010, their fifth years at Iowa State.
Maccani, a 2009 Big 12 Conference bars champion, feels that having her experience will impact the team outside the competition arena.
“I think I have experience, a lot of confidence and a lot of leadership that maybe in four years you might have a grasp of but in the fifth year you feel like I know how to do this,” Maccani said. “I know how practice goes, I know how competition goes and I have a better idea how to get the team to where we need to be.
“I feel more confident, I know what I need to do and I don't have the nerves as I did in previous years.”
Kent, who scored a career-high 9.875 on bars in 2009, echoes Maccani's sentiment.
“I feel more mature than I was last year,” Kent said. “I have a lot of experience and have been through a lot of situations that I can pass on to our freshmen.”
In addition to having the experience and leadership skills of a seasoned veteran, Kent and Maccani both have had proper time to heal from the injuries that sidelined them for entire seasons. Maccani suffered a ruptured Achiles tendon in her freshman campaign (2006), while Kent had to undergo surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during her sophomore season in 2007.
“I feel so strong,” Kent said. “For once, I feel very healthy and ready to go. In previous seasons I was coming off of a scope or an injury. I definitely feel this summer I had a chance to really work out and get in shape without any limitations.”
In addition to claiming a share of the bars title at the 2009 Big 12 Championships, Maccani registered a career-high 9.925 on the bars last season. Despite compiling a career-best campaign in 2009, Maccani still feels she has more to accomplish in 2010.
“I want to make it to nationals,” Maccani said. “I want to take our team to nationals, and I want to win Big 12's as a team this year. I still think I have a lot to accomplish this year.”
Maccani and Kent get their first crack at the 2010 season when the Cyclones open up competition Jan. 8 against Wisconsin-Stout. The meet is at Hilton Coliseum and scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
