AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State head softball coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler announced Monday the team's 2010 schedule, which will feature 24 games against NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a year ago.
The Cyclones will play 10 non-conference games against tournament teams from 2009 before 14 of 18 games in league play come against NCAA qualifiers.
“I think that our preseason schedule will really prepare us for what will again prove to be a tough Big 12 season,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “We feel that the schedule we have set up will give us a chance to succeed both inside and outside the conference.”
The season opens Feb. 12-14 at the Metrodome Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn. The Cyclones will face Drake, Western Illinois, Iowa and Arkansas while also facing the host Golden Gophers twice that weekend.
The following weekend will see the Cyclones play at a loaded Marriott Houston Invitational. At the tournament, ISU will face three teams that qualified for postseason play a year ago in Purdue, Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas. ISU will also meet Houston and UT-San Antonio in the tournament.
The Cyclones will also play in tournaments at College World Series qualifier Georgia (Feb. 26-28), Arkansas (March 5-7), Cal Poly (March 12-14) and Saint Louis (March 20-21).
Iowa State will play a pair of Missouri Valley Conference teams in Southern Illinois and Creighton prior to starting Big 12 play.
Conference play opens March 27 when ISU travels to Lubbock, Texas to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Cyclones will host Big 12 foes Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Missouri and Texas at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
ISU will also play host to intrastate opponents Iowa and Drake. The Iowa contest will be March 31 at 4 p.m. and will be part of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series.
The 2010 Big 12 Championships will be held in Oklahoma City for the 14th-straight year from May 14-16.
NCAA Tournament play will begin May 21 at selected sites.
