EVANSTON, Ill. – Alison Lacey led the Iowa State women's basketball team with 25 points as the Cyclones knocked off College of Charleston 68-50 Saturday afternoon and claimed the title of the Doubletree White Invitational at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Iowa State improved to 3-1 on the season while playing all 12 players for the second straight day. College of Charleston fell to 4-2, after knocking off Northwestern in the first day of the tournament. Lacey and Kelsey Bolte were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Cyclones scored 42 points in the second half, to earn the win, after a tight first half of action. Lacey was 5-for-9 from long range in the contest, and added five assists and five rebounds. Anna Prins was the only other Cyclone in double figures with 11 points. Bolte led the ISU charge on the glass with eight rebounds.
Iowa State shot 62.5 percent from the field in the second half and 48.1 percent for the game. The Cyclones finished with 10 three-pointers on 20 attempts. ISU also outrebounded Charleston 34-29. The Cougars were led with 13 points by Jade Hughes. They shot 38.5 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc for the contest.
Both teams got out to a slow start as Chelsea Poppens' traditional three-point play to start the game was the only scoring over the first three and a half minutes of the game. Bolte hit a trey to put the Cyclones up 6-2, but College of Charleston tied the game at 8-all.
Hughes, who finished the first half going 3-of-4 from long range, hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Charleston its only lead of the half, 16-13, with eight and a half minutes to go. Whitney Williams and Amanda Zimmerman answered with a pair of treys to push ISU back out ahead for good 19-16.
After Bolte knocked down another outside shot for a 24-16 Cyclones advantage, Deidra Jones hit three consecutive shots for Charleston to cut the halftime margin to two points, 26-24. The Cyclones shot 35.7 percent from the field and was 4-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first half. Charleston shot 38.5 percent from floor and also had four treys.
The Cyclones opened the second half on a 10-3 run, including five points from Prins to take a 36-27 lead. Iowa State went 9-for-13 from the field to begin in the second period, and Lacey hit a trio of three-pointers to go ahead 49-36.
Lacey drained another trey and the Cyclones easily broke the press to get Poppens a layup to put Iowa State up 57-42. Jessica Schroll got a layup with a little over a minute left for the final 18-point margin.
The Cyclones will return home to play nine of their next 10 at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State will play host to Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
