AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State senior Alison Lacey posted her second point-assist double-double of the season and six Cyclones finished in double figures to lead the ISU women's basketball team to a 83-44 win over Mississippi Valley State Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
Lacey had 10 points and tied a career-high with 10 assists in the winning effort. Junior Kelsey Bolte had 14 points and eight rebounds, as the Cyclones improved to 4-1 this season and MVSU dropped to 2-2. Also finishing in double figures were Whitney Williams (10), Chelsea Poppens (11), Anna Prins (10) and Jessica Schroll (10). It was the first time ISU has had six players in double digit scoring since the 2005-06 season.
Iowa State shot 44.6 percent from the field and 32 percent from three-point range. The Cyclone defense held the Devilettes to 31.5 percent shooting from the floor and 11.8 percent from long range. ISU outrebounded MVSU, 57-27. ISU's 57 boards were its best total since pulling down 59 against UMKC in 2008. Denae Stuckey led the charge on the boards for ISU with 10 rebounds. Prins also had nine.
“We had 29 field goals and 23 assists, so we are sharing the ball pretty well,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said “Our offensive rebounding was good, but that means we are missing shots. At least we were going after the ball. I thought we were aggressive. If you are not making shots, you at least want to get another one.”
The Cyclones dominated the first half of action, despite having one of its worst shooting halves of the season. Iowa State led 43-13 after shooting 37.8 percent from the field. ISU made the hustle plays to allow them the comfortable lead, however, outrebounding MVSU, 37-14. The Cyclones held a 15-0 edge in second chance points and outscored the Devilettes, 9-3, off turnovers.
“Overall we've had a history over not playing very well in the first half, but I thought we played pretty well,” Fennelly said. “It was good to see us come put and start pretty well. The only thing I was disappointed in the first half, was that our post play wasn't very good.”
Iowa State jumped out to an 8-0 lead thanks to treys by Bolte and Lacey. The Cyclones pushed that lead to 29-5 behind another Lacey three-pointer and seven straight points by Bolte. Mississippi Valley scored its only back-to-back field goals to close the gap to 29-10, but Poppens then got going to give ISU a 33-10 cushion. Lacey and Williams each hit a pair of free throws to give ISU its 43-13 halftime margin.
Bolte had 14 points and seven boards at the break, while Lacey had eight points and eight assists. The Cyclone defense held MVSU to 18.5 percent shooting (5-27) and the Devilettes' 13 points were the lowest first-half output by an ISU opponent since North Dakota scored just 12 against the Cyclones last season. MVSU was 0-for-10 from long range in the opening period.
The Devilettes went 1-for-7 from the field to start the second half, as Iowa State warmed up and forged ahead 51-18. Prins scored six points in that stretch. Fennelly went to a much more inexperienced lineup and they played well as they went on a 13-5 run to make the score 64-27. The Cyclones never looked back from there as the newcomers continued to score and rebound.
The Cyclones will next hit the court on Sunday to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The game will tip at noon at Hilton Coliseum.
