AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's basketball team hit a season-high 17 three-pointers to take down Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 80-64, Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. Alison Lacey led the way with seven treys and 27 points in the win.
Shellie Mosman and Chassidy Cole each made their first career starts in the contest. Mosman made the most of her opportunity recording a number of career highs, including points (14), three-pointers (3) and assists (5). Denae Stuckey also had a great day after earning a spot in the starting five, with 10 points and a pair of three-pointers to match her career high. Whitney Williams also turned in double figures with a career-high tying 14 points. Chelsea Poppens and Stuckey led ISU on the boards with eight rebounds each.
“I thought that the three seniors played the way you are supposed to play at Iowa State,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “Alison Lacey, Shellie Mosman and Denae Stuckey did all I asked of them and more and it stopped there. We have to play better if we want to have any chance on Thursday.”
Iowa State shot 47.5 percent from the field and 48.6 percent from long range, as it improved to 5-1 on the season. UAPB hit 39.1 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from outside the arc, while dropping to 1-6 on the season. The Cyclones picked up its effort on the glass in the second half to outrebound the Lady Lions 37-36.
“It was fun to see Shellie start,” Fennelly said. “She has worked very hard for a long time. We made the decision based on who wanted to wear the Iowa State jersey the way it is supposed to be worn. She had a day I think she'll remember for a long time. No one will ever know the impact Shellie has had on Iowa State.”
Both teams got out to a slow start, missing their first six shots combined. Lacey got the Cyclones started, scoring seven of their first 10 points to give ISU a 12-8 lead. In a stretch of just over two minutes, Iowa State heated up from outside, hitting four consecutive three-pointers without a miss for a 24-14 advantage. Mosman sparked the three-point barrage and Williams closed it.
Iowa State doubled UAPB's score 32-18 off baskets by Lacey and Amanda Zimmerman with seven minutes to go in the half. Lacey bombed another trey to give ISU a 38-23 margin and the two teams traded field goals the rest of the way for the 42-27 halftime ISU lead.
The Cyclones shot 51.7 percent from the field and were 10-of-19 from three-point range. The ISU defense held Pine Bluff to 34.4 percent shooting and just two three-pointers. ISU, however, was outrebounded by the Lady Lions, 20-17, at the break.
Stuckey and Lacey each drained a pair of three-pointers out of the gate to push Iowa State up 48-27 to open the second half. Williams and Lacey again put together back-to-back treys for a 61-41 advantage.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff went on a 10-0 run over a three-minute stretch that wrapped up with four minute to go in the game, closing in on Iowa State's lead to make it a 15-point lead, 72-57. Williams hit another trey to keep the Lady Lions at bay.
The Cyclones will play host to Iowa in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series on Thursday. The game will tip at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
