AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State senior Alison Lacey posted the second triple-double in school history and junior Kelsey Bolte nailed eight three-pointers as the Cyclone women's basketball team knocked off intrastate rival Iowa 85-66 Thursday night at Hilton Coliseum.
With the win, Iowa State improved to 6-1 on the season, while Iowa dropped to 5-5. The Cyclones also regained the lead in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series, 8-7.
“I thought it was a really good performance by our team,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “I thought we played hard on both sides of the court. We made a lot of threes tonight to get two points (in the Cy-Hawk series).”
Lacey posted 19 points, and career highs of 13 assists and 11 rebounds to record the first triple-double since Jane Lobenstein did it against Kansas in 1986. Lacey also added five steals and committed just one turnover in the performance. Bolte scored a career-high 26 points. In all, the Cyclones hit 16 three-pointers, with four different players knocking down at least two. Whitney Williams tied her career high with 14 points, hitting 4-of-5 treys, while Chelsea Poppens chipped in 11 points.
“I wasn't here for the Lafester Rhodes game, but I think this was one of those games,” Fennelly said. “I think if you are a basketball fan, you will remember Alison Lacey's night for a long time. She had 19 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds, and she defended the best player on their team.”
Iowa State shot 45.2 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from beyond arc. The Cyclones outrebounded the Hawkeyes, 32-28, and outscored Iowa 21-8 off second-chance points while forcing 19 Iowa miscues. Three players finished in double figures for Iowa. Jaime Printy led the way for the Hawkeyes, with 14 points. Iowa shot 48 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from three-point range.
The game went back and forth over the first five minutes, with Iowa taking an 11-9 lead before Bolte hit her first trey and put the Cyclones up 12-11. ISU did not relinquish the lead from there.
Bolte and Williams each hit a trey with 10 and a half minutes to go to give the Cyclones a seven-point edge, 24-17. Bolte and Lacey put together an 11-0 run for Iowa State at the end of the half, before Iowa scored with five seconds remaining to make the halftime score 43-29.
The Cyclones knocked down 11 three-pointers in the first half to get out to the 14 point lead at the break. Bolte was on fire with five treys and 17 points. ISU shot 45.7 percent from the floor and 50 percent from long range. The Hawkeyes shot 52 percent from the field and went 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Williams and Poppens each scored to open the second half, pushing Iowa State ahead 48-29. Iowa answered with a 7-2 run to cut the ISU margin back to 14, 50-36. Bolte got her shot going again, hitting back-to-back treys and Lacey drained a pair of free throws to put Iowa State up by 22, 58-36.
The Hawkeyes again cut the ISU margin to 14 points on two more occasions before Bolte hit another trey to give Iowa State a 76-49 cushion with six and a half minutes to go. Fennelly cleared his bench and the subs continued to play well, pushing ISU ahead by as many as 31 points with three and a half minutes to go.
Iowa State will travel to Minnesota for its only road game in the month of December this weekend. The Cyclones will face the Golden Gophers at Williams Arena at 3:30 p.m. Sunday and the game will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
