MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? The large number of Cyclone fans who made the trip to Williams Arena were rewarded with a 77-60 Iowa State women's basketball win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers Sunday afternoon.
The Cyclones improved to 7-1 with the win, while Minnesota dropped to 7-4. It was just Iowa State's second win over the Gophers in Williams Arena.
Alison Lacey and Whitney Williams led the Cyclones offensively, but the win was a total team effort on both ends of the court. Seven players scored five points or more, while the defense held Minnesota to 33.3 percent shooting for the contest.
Lacey led ISU in scoring with 23 points, and added three rebounds and three assists. She was 6-of-10 from the field and 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. Williams scored a career-high 17 points and also turned in three assists. Chelsea Poppens was the only other Cyclone in double figures with 12 points. Iowa State shot 56.5 percent from the floor in the second half and 48.9 percent for the contest. Minnesota held ISU to just five three-pointers. The Cyclones went 26-for-32 from the free throw line for the game. ISU outrebounded Minnesota, 37-28.
The first half was tight the whole way, with eight ties and eight lead changes. The largest lead for either team was four points. The Cyclones hit just two three-pointers, but shot 41.7 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes. The ISU defense played well, holding Minnesota to 22.6 percent shooting.
After Minnesota got out to an 11-7 lead, Lacey got back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 11-all with 12:45 to go in the first period. Jessica Schroll got a jumper to fall to put ISU up 17-16.
The Golden Gophers took a four-point lead (25-21) with five minutes left, but the Cyclones went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 27-25. Minnesota went to the charity stripe for a 28-27 lead, but Williams answered with a pair of free throws and then drained a three from the corner as time expired to give ISU a 32-28 halftime margin.
Iowa State went 10-for-13 from the charity stripe, while Minnesota went 9-for-10 from the stripe, in the first half.
To open the second half, ISU gave up two quick baskets by Kiara Buford. The Cyclones responded, however, with an eight-point run, sparked by a three from Lacey to give ISU a 40-32 advantage.
Minnesota went on a run to cut the Cyclone margin to five (44-39), and then the Gopher defense forced two straight shot clock violations by ISU. Lacey went to the line for three free throws, knocking them all down, and Denae Stuckey made the hustle play of the day pulling an offensive rebound off the floor and sticking it back in for a layup. Lacey went back to the line for another two points to close out a 7-0 run for a 51-39 ISU lead with 10 and a half minutes to go.
The Cyclones were able to hold off the Gophers from there. Amanda Zimmerman nailed a trey with four minutes to go to give Iowa State a 67-54 margin. Minnesota scored the next three points, but Iowa State finished the game with a 10-3 run.
Iowa State will take the week off for finals before returning to Hilton Coliseum to play host to Northern Iowa at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20.
