AMES, Iowa – The Cyclones shot a season-best 59.2 percent from the field and Alison Lacey contributed her fourth double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Iowa State women's basketball team to a 76-51 win over Northern Iowa on Sunday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones stretched their winning streak to seven straight as they improved to 8-1 on the campaign. Northern Iowa dropped to 4-6 on the season. Iowa State ran its undefeated mark against the Panthers in Ames to 15-0 and improved to 30-8 all-time against UNI.
“Our guard play was really good, and that was the difference in the game,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “We shot the ball really well. If we would have hit a few more layups, Aus (Lacey) probably has another triple-double. We shot it well enough to overcome some sloppy play. We found a way to win the game.”
Coming off a week of fighting strep throat, Lacey went 9-for-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from long range for her 23 points. She has scored in double figures in every game this season and has scored 20 or more in four contests. She also had 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals. Freshman Amanda Zimmerman had a career night for the Cyclones posting career highs in points (11), rebounds (6), blocked shots (4) and assists (4). Zimmerman went 5-for-5 from the field for her 11 points.
Whitney Williams chipped in nine points on a trio of three-pointers, while Kelsey Bolte and Chassidy Cole each had eight points. ISU shot 60.9 percent from the field in the second half and was 10-of-19 from long range for the contest. The Cyclones outrebounded UNI, 41-26, and held the Panthers to 30.2 percent shooting from the field for the game.
Iowa State got out to a 9-2 lead, with five points from Lacey and four from Chelsea Poppens to start the game. The Cyclone defense held UNI to just one field goal in its first seven attempts for a 14.3 shooting percentage over the first five minutes.
The Panthers cut the ISU margin, 14-10, but Lacey scored her 10th point of the half and Williams followed with a trey to put the Cyclones ahead 19-10. Lacey sparked a 9-0 run with back-to-back field goals to give ISU a 30-16 margin. Iowa State went on another 8-0 run at the end of the half before the Panthers hit a shot at the buzzer to make the Cyclone halftime advantage, 38-21.
Lacey went 7-of-8 from the field for 17 points to go with her game-leading seven rebounds at the break. The Cyclones shot 57.7 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc, while the ISU defense held the Panthers to 21.1 percent shooting and a 2-for-15 performance from long range. UNI forced the Cyclones into eight first-half turnovers and the Panthers pulled nine rebounds off the offensive glass, giving UNI 12 more shots than ISU over the first 20 minutes.
Jacqui Kalin scored seven straight points out of the gates for the Panthers to open the second half to slice the ISU lead to 10, 38-28. The Cyclones responded with a 13-2 run, with scoring from five different players to build a 21-point cushion (51-30).
The Panthers got four straight points to trim the lead to 15 points, 56-41, with 8:21 to go, but once again Iowa State found answers, exploding with 16 unanswered points for a 70-41 advantage. Cole knocked down a three-pointer to close the run that give Iowa State its 29-point lead. UNI never got closer than 23 points the rest of the way.
