Cyclone Tennis Plays Tough in Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? The Cyclone tennis team showed fight by winning five close singles matches against the home team in the second day of play in the Western Michigan Super Challenge Saturday.
Three of ISU's singles wins came in a tie-breaker to determine the third set. Tessa Lang won her single match convincingly with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over WMU's Maria Nivia. Maria Macedo held on after giving up the second set for a 6-2, 3-6, (10-7) win.
Marie-Christine Chartier and Alyssa Palen both put up valiant efforts, fighting back after dropping their first sets in extenuating circumstances. They endured a 45-minute delay during a power outage, but played toughed to come back and win their matches. Chartier defeated Jill Pastunink, 3-6, 6-4, (10-6), while Alyssa Palen won over April Kerr 2-6, 7-6, (10-7).
“Our singles matches went much better today,” ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. “The highlight of the day was that we had five matches go to tie-breakers and we won three of the five. I was pleased with how we competed to the end of every match.”
“Marie and Alyssa came back and won their matches after trailing, so I was happy with how that went. We are playing much more mentally tough.”
Jasmine Lee also earned a 6-1, 6-3 singles victory over WMU's Rachel Denny. The Cyclones went 2-2 in doubles action. Jenna Langhorst and Erin Karonis paired up to defeat a team from Louisville, 9-7, while Palen and Liza Wischer teamed up to earn an 8-4 win over another duo from Louisville.
Iowa State will close out fall play on Sunday in the final day of the Super Challenge.
