AMES, Iowa - Iowa State takes its 9-1 record South to the Sleep Inn Classic in Denton, Texas this weekend. Iowa State will face its toughest competition of the season this weekend, facing a pair of Missouri Valley squads in Missouri State and Wichita State. ISU will also face the host, North Texas, as well as Butler and Central Arkansas.

Cyclone Notebook
? Iowa State is 9-1 for the second year in a row after winning five of six last weekend at the Jacksonville Tournament. After three tournaments last year ISU was 11-1.
? ISU is looking to win at least a share of the first three tournaments of the season for the second-straight year.
? The Cyclones are tied for the Big 12 lead with 67 runs scored. ISU leads the league in hits (81), doubles (20), triples (3) and RBI (57).
? The Cyclones are fourth in the league in hitting (.295) and second in pitching (1.38).
? Offensively, ISU is led by juniors Alex Johnson and Kelsey Kidwell. The duo holds the top-two spots in the Big 12 for hits with Kidwell in the lead with 15 and Johnson second with 13.
? Johnson is second in the Big 12 with 14 RBI. Seven of her RBI have come with two outs.
? Iowa State continued to show off its speed last weekend and currently has the league leader in triples (Kelsey Kidwell, 2) and stolen bases (Carleigh Berry, 8).
? Johnson is making a move up the career charts. The Raymore, Mo. native is tied for third at ISU with 77 runs batted in.
? The Cyclones average dipped last weekend but six players hit above .300. As a team, ISU hit .270 in the six games.
? Sydni Jones had a big weekend for ISU, hitting .353 and blasting two homers. She drove in seven runs.
? Jones and Johnson now have 12 career homers each. They are tied for seventh on the ISU all-time charts.
? Junior Charissa Carlin won two more games last weekend to improve to 4-0 in 2009. Carlin owns a career mark of 23-20.
? Sophomore Rachel Zabriskie has continued her strong play, ranking second in the conference with a 0.68 ERA. She has a league-high five wins and is second with 40 strikeouts.
? Zabriskie now holds a career mark of 20-15.
? Zabriskie is averaging 6.77 strikeouts per game. She also averages 20 strikeouts per walk issued.
? Freshmen Heidi Kidwell has been a bright spot for the Cyclones this season. The younger Kidwell is hitting .353, is 2-for-2 on stolen bases and has driven in four this season in eight games.
? As a team, ISU is hitting .336 (41-122) with runners in scoring position.
? Johnson needs just 13 hits to move into Iowa State's career top-10. The school record for hits is 216 by Jenny Condon. Johnson is just 97 shy of tying that mark.
? Johnson is also closing in on the career doubles mark of 33 (Kris McMaster). The junior already has 28 doubles.
? Kelsey Kidwell will most likely be the next Cyclone to reach 100 career hits. Kidwell needs just 23, despite having only four her freshman year. Alex Johnson and Courtney Wray are currently over 100 career hits.
Scouting Missouri State
? Missouri State enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record. The Bears were picked to finish sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference.
? Missouri State's wins came over Boston College and Bryant. Its losses were to Nicholls State, Centenary and SIU-Edwardsville.
? Senior Jessie Smith leads the Bears with a .538 batting average. The infielder has a double and a home run. Another senior, Jana Shewmaker is second among players with 10 or more at bats. Shewmaker is hitting .333.
? Three pitchers split time in the circle pretty evenly. Natalie Rose (1-0, 0.00 ERA) and Lauren Supak (0-2, 3.50 ERA) have seen 12 innings each. Lauren McGinley (1-1, 3.11 ERA) has tossed 11 innings. Rose has a team-high 18 strikeouts this season.
Scouting North Texas
? North Texas sits at 4-3 after a split with UT-San Antonio Tuesday night. The Mean Green took the first game 8-3 before falling 8-0 in six innings in the finale.
? Freshman Lisa Johnson and senior Kadie Platt lead the Mean Green with .333 batting averages. Johnson, a third baseman, has driven in a team-high seven runs for North Texas, which is hitting .232 as a team.
? The Mean Green are 10-for-16 on stolen base attempts. Shortstop Lyndi Samuelson and second baseman Anna Barren lead the team with three swipes each.
? The North Texas' pitching staff holds a 2.73 ERA and is allowing opponents to hit .284 against it.
? Three pitchers have wins for the Mean Green, led by sophomore Jennifer Smith, who has a 2-1 record and a 3.05 ERA. Smith has a team-high 13 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. Ashley Lail is 1-1 with a team-best ERA of 1.58 and Kayla Lawson rounds out the staff with a 1-1 record and a 3.29 ERA.
Scouting Central Arkansas
? Central Arkansas swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff to get back to .500 with a 6-6 record.
? The Bears are hitting .298 as a team and are led by junior Rachel Baucom, who is hitting .350 and has driven in seven. Sophomore Courtney Brock has a team-high 10 RBI and is fifth on the team with a .317 average.
? UCA's pitching staff has a 2.56 ERA and 68 strikeouts. Holli Hill (3-4, 1.71 ERA) and Kelly Martino (2-1, 2.12 ERA) see the majority of time for the staff. Hill has 34 strikeouts while Martino has 30.
Scouting Wichita State
? Wichita State is just 3-5 this season but three of its losses have come to teams in the top-25. The Shockers also picked up a thrilling 15-12 win over Oregon, which was receiving votes when the teams faced off on opening weekend.
? The Shockers are coming off a 1-3 weekend that saw them drop contests to ninth-ranked Cal, 23rd-ranked North Carolina and Penn State before dismantling George Washington in the tournament finale.
? WSU is led by sophomore catcher Heather Gerritse, who is hitting .476 through the season's first two weekends. Kara L'Huillier hits .391 and is tied with BreAnna Brown for the team lead with seven RBI.
? Wichita State's young pitching staff has struggled early this season. The staff has a combined ERA of 6.86. Sophomore Brianna Smet is 1-1 with a 4.01 ERA to lead the staff. Freshman Kasha Kolb (2-4, 6.80 ERA) has a team-best 17 strikeouts.
? The staff has struggled with control early, allowing 22 walks while striking out just 29.
Scouting Butler
? Butler, picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, hasn't played a game this year. The Bulldogs went 17-29 overall last year.
? Senior second baseman Alex Boros is the top returnee for the Bulldogs. Boros hit .265 and had a team-high 27 RBI. She also paced the team with nine doubles.
? Erin Jackson also returns after hitting .257 as a freshman. Jackson was 7-for-8 on stolen bases last year.
? The pitching staff returns three from the 2008 squad and has added another. Kristen Malinkey is the top returner after finishing with a 5-12 record and a 4.21 ERA last year.
