AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State senior women's basketball player Amanda Nisleit was named a winter Chick-fil-A Community Champion by the Big 12 Conference. During the fall, winter and spring terms, one student-athlete from each institution is honored based on academics, community service and leadership/sportsmanship.
“Amanda is a champion person first and foremost,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “She has impacted so many people in such a positive manner during her time at Iowa State. This a great honor and no one deserves it more than Amanda.”
Nisleit holds a 3.87 grade-point average in elementary education and is a member of Iowa State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She is a team captain for the 17-4 ISU women's basketball squad.
The Woodbury, Minn., native has been extremely involved in community service since her arrival in Ames. She has participated in St. Cecilia's Mileage Club, promoting health and fitness to elementary school students. She has spent time reading to students in Gilbert and Des Moines, and has spoken to students at Kate Mitchell Elementary school about respect, sportsmanship and teamwork.
Nisleit has also helped organize Thanksgiving baskets along with other ISU student-athletes for needy families in the Ames community and has participated in Adopt-a-Family, collecting and delivering holiday gifts to families in need in the community.
Iowa State will be awarded $3,000 each year from Chick-fil-A for the student-athletes' efforts.
