Cyclones Improve To 2-0 With 11-2 Win

PEKIN, Ill. ? Iowa State got a strong pitching performance by Charissa Carlin and timely hitting to defeat Western Illinois 11-2 and remain undefeated on the season.
Carlin (1-0) gave up two runs despite eight Western Illinois hits as ISU improved to 2-0 on the season.

Alex Johnson went 2-for-2 in the game while also drawing two walks. Johnson also drove in two runs in the win. Kelsey Kidwell continued her strong play, collecting hits in three of her five plate appearances and driving in two runs.
The Cyclones opened the scoring in the first inning on a RBI double by Johnson that plated Amanda Bradberry. Western Illinois responded in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of two Cyclone throwing errors to tie it at 1-1.
Both teams went down quietly in the second but ISU got another run in the third on a run-scoring single by Sydni Jones. Jones' first hit of the season plated Kelsey Kidwell, who singled to leadoff the inning.
The Westerwinds again had an answer after ISU's third error of the game in the third inning. Julie DePolo walked to open the inning and came in to score on Johnson's throwing error on an attempted steal.
Heidi and Kelsey Kidwell had run-scoring base hits in the fourth inning as Iowa State went on top 4-2. Heidi Kidwell's hit scored pinch runner Anna Bortz following a Jacquelyn Beatty walk that started the inning.
Another double by Johnson in the fifth inning scored Bradberry, who doubled off WIU pitcher Lori Pankratz to start the inning.
The Cyclones were able to tack on two more runs in the sixth inning to make it 7-2. An error by the Westerwinds allowed Kelsey Kidwell and Carleigh Berry to come around and break open the game.
Iowa State scored four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. The inning included an RBI walk by freshman Emily Gilbert and RBI by Kelsey Kidwell and Berry.
The Cyclones face Wright State Sunday at noon.
