AMES, Iowa?The No. 21 Iowa State gymnastics team attempted to overcome a one-point deficient in the final rotation, but came up .025 of a point short Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones tied their season high (49.225) on floor in the final rotation and put together a near-historic performance on bars, but fell to No. 20 West Virginia, 194.925-194.900.
The Cyclones started on vault, while West Virginia was on bars. Returning from injury, junior Megan Barnes led the Cyclones with a 9.775 as ISU scored a 48.450. The Mountaineers were solid on bars, notching a 48.925 to take the early advantage.

Iowa State sliced into the West Virginia on bars, notching a season high on any event with a 49.325, as three gymnasts either tied or set a new career high. It also equals the fifth-highest bars score in ISU program history, a mere .125 off the Cyclone mark. Ashley Kent (9.875) and Barnes (9.850) registered new career bests, while senior Jasmine Thompson tied hers with a 9.850. Ceilia Maccani was the high scorer for ISU, tallying a 9.900, while Nikki Dilbert equaled her season high with a 9.825. West Virginia was strong on vault, notching a 48.975 to stay ahead, 97.900-97.775.
“I am extremely happy with bars,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We've been talking and working on sticking our landings and we did it tonight. The scores reflect that hard work.”
Kent received the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” that goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans.
The Mountaineers extended their lead in the third rotation, scoring a 48.775. Iowa State was shaky on beam, tallying a 47.900. Kent was strong again for the Cyclones as she notched a team-best 9.750. With one rotation remaining, West Virginia led 146.675-145.675.
A stellar closing performance on floor by the Cyclones closed the meet to the slimmest of margins, with Iowa State scoring a season-high-tying 49.225. Thompson closed out her senior night with a career-high-tying 9.900. Dilbert made her season debut on the event, notching a clutch 9.800.
The Cyclones move into the post season starting with their next meet when they play host to the Big 12 Championship on March 21. Starting at 2 p.m., the meet in Hilton Coliseum will feature No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 12 Nebraska, No. 13 Missouri and Iowa State. Last season, the Cyclones came within .100 of winning the competition.
