Cyclones Named to Academic All-Big 12 Squad

AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State student-athletes Kara Hickey and Erin Karonis were named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team. Hickey, ISU's only senior this season, was named to the league's academic first team for the third consecutive year. Karonis is a sophomore and was named to the team for the first time in her career at ISU.
Hickey, a statistics major, carries a 3.86 grade-point average and Karonis, a communications major, boasts a 3.31 GPA. Hickey clinched ISU's Big 12 win over Kansas State this season, and Karonis won a team-high 15 singles matches in dual action, primarily playing at the No. 1 singles slot.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or over the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
