AMES, Iowa- Resolution No. 49 was passed unanimously on a voice vote by Iowa House of Representatives Thursday. The vote was totally bipartisan as legislators honored Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly and the achievements of the 2008-09 women's basketball team at the state capitol.
Fennelly was first saluted in the House, where state representatives honored the Iowa State women's basketball team that made the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championship last month. The resolution recognized Iowa State's comeback win in the Sweet Sixteen of the tournament over Michigan State. The victory was the Cyclones' 27th victory of the season, equaling the school record.
After the House appearance, Fennelly was escorted across the rotunda to the Iowa Senate. The Senate was not in session, but the Iowa State coach was afforded the rare honor of being allowed into the caucus sessions of both parties where he received an enthusiastic welcome.
“I'm honored just to be here with you at a time when I know you are very busy on behalf of the people of the state of Iowa,” Fennelly said. “I really appreciate the opportunity to come down here on behalf of Iowa State. It is really a privilege to work at Iowa State University.”
Fennelly has taken Iowa State women's basketball to unprecedented height in 14 seasons. He truly needed no introductions at the Capitol, where he was frequently stopped by individuals wanting to meet the man who has taken Iowa State to 10 NCAA Championships during his successful tenure.
