AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's basketball team's third-place national attendance ranking in 2008-09 is the Cyclones' top ranking in school history. The NCAA released official attendance rankings this week and the only teams to rank ahead of ISU were perennial powers Tennessee and Connecticut.
“I can not thank our fans enough for their amazing support of Cyclone women's basketball,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “The atmosphere created by our fans provides our players with a truly special experience. Hilton Magic is without question one of the best environments in the nation.”
The Cyclones averaged 9,754 fans per game to rank higher than any team in the Big 12 Conference. Oklahoma was fourth with an average attendance of 9,007.
Iowa State has ranked in the top 10 in attendance for the last 10 seasons. Before ranking third in 2008-09, the Cyclones' highest ranking was fourth. ISU has ranked fourth nationally four times (2007-08, 2001-02, 2000-01, 1999-2000).
Ten of the 12 league schools finished in the top 50 of the rankings and seven ranked 20th or better. As a conference, the Big 12 led the nation in attendance for the 10th straight season while reaching the one million mark for the fourth time in conference history. The league totaled an NCAA record 1,073,069 fans for an average of 5,312 per game.
