AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State freshmen got their Cyclone careers off to a hot start, going 3-0 in singles at the Drake Invitational on Friday to set the pace for ISU on the opening day of the fall tennis season. The Cyclones had a great day at both the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis as well as the Drake Invitational in Des Moines. Overall, the Cyclones went 7-3 in singles matches on the opening day of both tournaments combined.
“I think we played really well,” ISU head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We evaluated the ground strokes we've been working on and I was pleased with that. We need to try to work on cleaning up some matches tomorrow. We had some unforced errors today that we can focus on tomorrow.”
All three Cyclones who played in the top flight of each tournament earned wins on day one. In Minneapolis, ISU's top returner, Erin Karonis grinded out a win over Nebraska's Steffi Weinstein in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). In Des Moines, Maria Macedo picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Creighton's Lauren Mastero. In the bottom of the same bracket, Tessa Lang dominated in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over South Dakota's Rjalda Zenjic.
“Erin played an incredible match,” Espinosa said. “She stuck to the game plan, even after losing the first set. She came back and played really well.”
Jasmine Lee opened her ISU career by sweeping UNO's Caitlin Christy (6-0, 6-0), while fellow freshman Jenna Langhorst opened the season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Creighton's Lindsey Erickson. Ellie Nixon continued the trend for the ISU newcomers, winning 6-3, 6-2 over UNO's Diana Dobey.
“From what I've heard, the players at Drake played well,” Espinosa added. “I'm pleased with how things are going at both tournaments and we will see what tomorrow brings.”
The Cyclones didn't have as much such success in the doubles draws, going 5-4 for the day in the two tournaments combined. Macedo and Langhorst advanced in the top doubles flight at Drake with an 8-0 win over a pair from UNO. Tessa Lang and Lee advanced to the semifinals of that same flight with two wins over teams from UNO (8-0) and Creighton (8-2).
The Cyclones will continue action in both tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.
