COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Iowa State's offensive woes continued for its second straight Big 12 women's basketball contest as the Cyclones fell 68-44 at eighth-ranked Texas A&M Wednesday night. Iowa State dropped to 12-3 and 0-2 in the Big 12, while the Aggies improved to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Only seven players found the scoring column for ISU. Alison Lacey led the way for Iowa State with 19 points, for her 14th game in double figures this season. Lacey eclipsed the 500-rebound mark with five boards. She also passed out two assists. Amanda Zimmerman was ISU's second-leading scorer with nine points and Chelsea Poppens led the Cyclones on the boards with seven rebounds. Texas A&M's Danielle Adams torched the Cyclones for 20 points. Tanisha Smith also finished in double figures for A&M with 10.
Texas A&M shot 50 percent from the floor and finished with three treys. The Aggies also went 13-for-18 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones shot 30 percent from the field and were 3-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Aggies outrebounded ISU, 35-30. Iowa State committed 16 turnovers in the contest.
The first half did not go as planned for the Cyclones as they trailed 32-18 at the break. ISU's 18 points were its lowest first half output since being held to 15 points by Stanford on Nov. 11, 2008. The Aggies scored the final six points of the half, including four points over the final eight seconds.
Texas A&M got out to a 4-0 lead, but Lacey scored four straight for the Cyclones to tie the game. The Aggies got up 13-6, before Denae Stuckey scored to cut the margin to five points with 10 minutes to go in the half. Kelsey Bolte finally got her only three-pointer to drop with just under three minutes left to cut A&M's margin to eight, 24-16. Stuckey scored again to cut the margin back to eight, 26-18, before the Aggies went on their 6-0 run to end the half.
Iowa State shot 26.9 percent from the field over the first half, while going 2-for-11 from beyond the arc. The Aggies shot 53.8 percent from the field and were 0-for-5 from long range, after entering the game leading the nation in three-point percentage. Texas A&M outrebounded ISU, 17-14, over the first 20 minutes.
The second half didn't start any better for the Cyclones, as Texas A&M went on a 7-0 run and ISU didn't score until Lacey hit a free throw with 16:36 to go. Stuckey scored ISU's first field goal of the half with 13:31 to go, but the Aggies were up by 25, 48-23, at that point.
Lacey scored eight straight points for ISU, as the Cyclones cut the margin to 21, 54-33. Texas A&M had an answer for everything Iowa State did from that point forward.
The Cyclones will remain on the road for its next tilt with Colorado at 5:30 p.m. (central) Saturday. Iowa State will return to Hilton Coliseum next Wednesday, playing host to Kansas at 7 p.m.
