AMES, Iowa-The Iowa State tennis team will kick off the 2010 spring season Sunday against Minnesota in Rochester, Minn. The Cyclones will see action on the road for 11 meets before finally returning home to Ames for a four-meet homestand in March.
"Minnesota is a big match because they are ranked," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "It's a team that we've been closing the gap on a little bit at a time, but we are not there yet. We've been wanting another shot at them. I think it will be a good measure for us of how we are going to match up later in the season and when the Big 12 season starts."
The Cyclones begin spring play after a two-month hiatus since the conclusion of the fall season, in which Maria Fernanda Macedo finished ranked in regional singles play and Liza Wischer and Alyssa Palen finished ranked regionally in doubles.
"I think the fall season went really well," Espinosa said. "We played extremely well we had a lot of people that had a very successful fall season. Now, we're trying to get them ready coming in and getting them mentally prepared more than anything."
Espinosa expects his team to do the best they can to put themselves into the best position to win.
"There's a lot of enthusiasm on the team, so hopefully we can go out there and compete well," Espinosa said. "I think if we take care of what we have to do, then the wins will come as we go forward with the season."
