AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State forward Amanda Zimmerman was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Zimmerman had the biggest game of her young career in ISU's overtime win at Texas on Saturday.
The Huxley, Iowa, native finished with a career-high 14 points, going 6-for-9 from the field and 1-for-1 from beyond the arc against the Longhorns. She also pulled down five rebounds, posted an assist, a blocked shot and did not commit a turnover.
Zimmerman grabbed a huge offensive rebound and found Alison Lacey for the three-pointer that sent the game to overtime.
“Z by far had the best game she's had since she's been on campus,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “She played 27 minutes and scored 14 points. We've been talking all along that we've got to find someone game-to-game that gives us something inside. I thought Z wanted the ball, they got her the ball, and she was 6-for-9. I thought she did a lot of really good things in a pretty pressure-packed situation on the road at Texas in an overtime game. Hopefully that's a game she will see as a starting point for a really good run the last six weeks (of the season).”
In the win over Kansas on Wednesday, Zimmerman had seven points. For the week, she averaged 10.5 points per game and shot 61.5 percent from the field. She was also 3-for-5 from three-point range.
The honor was the first of Zimmerman's career. Three Cyclone players have earned Big 12 weekly honors this season, including Prins earning Freshman Player of the Week accolades in the opening week of the campaign.
Iowa State moved into the Associated Press Top 25 on Monday, jumping to No. 22 after their wins against Kansas and at No. 20 Texas. ISU has received votes for the last six weeks in the AP Poll. The Cyclones were ranked 21st in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll last week. This week's Top 25 will be released on Tuesday.
