AMES, Iowa ? The 23rd-ranked Iowa State women's basketball team closed out the nonconference schedule with a 68-43 win over South Dakota Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones had another solid shooting night and an outstanding performance on the glass.
Denae Stuckey led the Cyclones with a career-high 13 points and nearly collected the first double-double of her career with nine rebounds and four assists. She was 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and 4-of-6 from the field. Anna Prins was the only other ISU player in double figures with 10 points. She also had a pair of three-pointers for ISU. Kelsey Bolte and Chelsea Poppens chipped in nine points each and Chassidy Cole added eight.
Iowa State shot 46 percent from the field, including a 56 percent shooting mark in the first half. The Cyclones were 8-for-19 from long range and 14-of-19 from the charity stripe. ISU outrebounded South Dakota, 46-21. The Coyotes were led by Abby Kinder with 12 points and five rebounds.
“We are excited to be 12-1 at this point, and the nonconference schedule is over,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “I'm proud of our players for getting to this point. Denae Stuckey without question was the best player on the floor for us tonight. That might be the first time she's ever been our leading scorer.”
After South Dakota scored the first two points of the game on a pair of free throws, Iowa State responded with a 17-0 run. The run consisted of six points form the charity stripe for the Cyclones.
After an Amber Hegge field goal for the Coyotes, Stuckey and Bolte knocked down back-to-back treys and Bolte scored on a layup as the Cyclones went ahead 25-4. The Cyclones led 41-19 at the break after shooting 56 percent from the field and holding South Dakota to 24 percent shooting.
Stuckey and Cole each had a team-leading eight points, including a pair of three-pointers by each. ISU also outrebounded USD, 23-8, at the break.
Anna Prins hit a pair of three-pointers as the Cyclones got out to a 49-25 lead to open the second half, but the Coyotes responded with a 9-2 run to cut the margin to 17 points (51-34).
Iowa State went ahead by 25, 64-39, on a traditional three-point play by Poppens with 3:10 to go in the game. Whitney Williams scored a layup with six seconds to go for ISU's largest lead of the game (68-41). The Coyotes scored the final two points for the final 25-point margin.
The Cyclones will open the Big 12 slate Saturday when they face 12th-ranked and undefeated Nebraska at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The Huskers are 13-0 after the nonconference season.
