AMES, Iowa - The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball committee today announced that Iowa State University has been selected to host the 2012 NCAA Women's Basketball First and Second Rounds at Hilton Coliseum. Des Moines and Wells Fargo Arena have also been awarded the 2012 regional.
"The NCAA has once again acknowledged Hilton Coliseum as one of the great venues for women's college basketball," Senior Associate Athletics Director Calli Sanders said. "This is a testament to our coaches, student-athletes, event staff and loyal fan base. We are extremely appreciative of this opportunity to showcase our community to the nation and for our fans to enjoy a significant portion of the NCAA Tournament right here in our own backyard."
The first and second rounds will remain a four-team format. Like the 2010 tournament, if Iowa State is awarded a berth in the NCAA Championship, it will be guaranteed to play at its host site.
"It is a great honor that the NCAA has selected Iowa State University as a host for the 2012 First and Second Rounds," head coach Bill Fennelly said. "Hilton Coliseum has been one of the best venues in the nation for the NCAA Tournament."
Iowa State has hosted the NCAA Tournament at Hilton Coliseum on six different occasions, most recently in 2009-10 when it advanced to the Sweet 16 after wins over Lehigh and Green Bay.
"Hilton Coliseum has provided some great memories for student-athletes and fans who have been here in the past," Fennelly said. "Iowa State, Ames and Central Iowa have become one of the nation's favorite places for women's basketball."
Iowa State has ranked in the top-10 nationally in attendance in every year since 1999-2000, including third-place finishes in each of the last two seasons.
