AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's basketball team was picked fifth by the Big 12 Conference coaches in the 2010-11 preseason poll.
The Cyclones finished tied for second with Oklahoma in the Big 12 standings in 2009-10, after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll. Iowa State is coming off a 25-8 season, which included an 11-5 mark in league play and a Sweet 16 appearance.
The Cyclones return six letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's team and are led by senior guard Kelsey Bolte, who averaged 12.3 points per game. Chelsea Poppens (8.8 ppg, 7.2 rebounds per game) and Anna Prins (9.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg) also return as starters after strong freshman campaigns.
Baylor was selected as the preseason favorite by the coaches. The Lady Bears received all of the possible 11 first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team). Texas A&M garnered the other first-place vote and was picked second. Oklahoma and Texas followed in third and fourth with the Cyclones being picked fifth and Kansas sixth.
Nebraska, last year's regular season champion, was selected seventh, followed by Oklahoma State in eighth, Kansas State listed ninth, Texas Tech in 10th, Missouri 11th and Colorado 12th.
The Cyclones open the season with a home exhibition game against Minnesota State-Mankato on Nov. 4.
