CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Hallie Christofferson scored 19 points on her 19th birthday to lead Iowa State to a 69-59 win at Northern Iowa Sunday afternoon. With the win, Iowa State improves to 3-0 this season, while UNI falls to 2-1.
On a day in which the Panthers made a concerted effort to shut down Cyclone sharpshooter Kelsey Bolte, Christofferson stepped up with a career-high scoring effort on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
The freshman from Hamlin, Iowa was joined in double figures by Bolte's 13 points, eight of which came in the second half, and 10 each from Chelsea Poppens and Anna Prins. Prins also grabbed 10 rebounds to record her second career double-double.
The Panthers owned the offensive glass in the first half, grabbing nine offensive rebounds en route to a 33-30 lead at the half. UNI had 11 second-chance points to just two for the Cyclones, who took advantage of 11 free throws to keep the game close. Christofferson led the Cyclones in the opening period with seven points, followed closely by Poppens, who scored six points in just five minutes.
The Cyclones played much better in the second half, using an 8-0 run with just over four minutes remaining to take control of the game. After being outrebounded 19-18 in the opening stanza, ISU held a 24-15 edge on the glass in the second half.
The Cyclones were 28-for-36 from the free throw line in the game to offset a 3-for-12 performance from behind the arc.
The win was the Cyclones' eighth in a row over Northern Iowa.
Iowa State will be back in action Thursday when it faces Virginia at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
