ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands - 17th-ranked Iowa State made 14 3-pointers to come-from-behind and defeat No. 21 TCU, 64-59, Friday afternoon at the Paradise Jam. With the win, Iowa State improves to 5-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
The Cyclones were on fire from behind the arc in the game, hitting seven 3-pointers in each half to overcome a seven-point TCU lead with just 9:41 left in the game. In a game in which they tied Canisius College's active streak for most consecutive games with a 3-pointer at 488, Iowa State made good on 14-of-25 from 3-point land in the win.
Newcomer Lauren Mansfield tied a tournament record with six of Iowa State's long balls to record a career-high 20 points. With Iowa State trailing by seven, Mansfield connected on 3-pointers on four-straight trips down the court to put Iowa State up by five points (55-50).
The Cyclones would never look back, increasing their lead to as many as six and eventually securing the five-point win.
Iowa State jumped out to a quick start, getting 3-pointers from Mansfield and Hallie Christofferson and holding TCU without a point for almost five minutes to start the game. The Cyclones increased their lead to eight points (16-8) on a 3-pointer from Bolte with 9:20 left, but went cold leading to an 8-0 run by TCU.
The Horned Frogs took their first lead at 21-19 with 3:32 left in the half on a long ball by Helena Sverrisdottir, but Iowa State would scrap back and lead 29-28 going into the break after late 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions by Bolte, who led the way with 11 first half points, and Mansfield.
Mansfield was joined in double figures by Bolte, who finished with 19 points on five of her own 3-pointers.
Iowa State held a 40-30 edge on the boards and shot 43.1 percent (22-51) from the field to overcome 17 turnovers.
TCU was paced by Emily Carter's 21 points and Helena Sverrisdottir's 14 points.
The Cyclones wrap up action at the Paradise Jam Saturday at 2:15 p.m. (CT) in the championship game against No. 10 West Virginia.
