KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Iowa State tennis team opened play Friday at the Western Michigan Super Challenge tournament in Kalamazoo. Joining Iowa State in competition is DePaul, Indiana, Penn State, Western Michigan and a combination team of athletes from Louisville and Wisconsin.
In doubles play, three Iowa State duos faced Indiana.
The first Cyclone pair, Maria Fernanda Macedo and Tessa Lang, fell to Leslie Hureau and Eygeniya Vertesheva 8-1, while teammates Marie-Christine Chartier and Emma Waites were defeated by Charlotte Martin and Diana Kyllmann 8-3. ISU gained a win with Erin Karonis and Liza Wischer defeating Myriam Sopel and Sophie Garre 8-5, which concluded first round doubles play.
“Individually, everybody in doubles is playing better, but we still need to clean up a few things here and there to really mesh together,” head coach Armando Espinosa said.
In second-round doubles, Iowa State faced both Louisville and Wisconsin players.
Alaina Trgovich and Nicky Stracar of Wisconsin defeated Karonis and Chartier 8-4, while the duo of Reber and Wischer fell to Badger duo Jenny Hois and Aleksandra Markovic 8-2. Lang and Macedo solidly defeated Louisville's Sarah Miller and Rebecca Shine, chalking up the second Cyclone doubles victory of the day.
“We're looking for consistency in doubles and singles,” Espinosa said. "We competed pretty well throughout, but there is definitely room for improvement.”
Iowa State also dueled host Western Michigan in first round singles.
Macedo defeated Maggie Remynse 6-4, 1-6, 1-0, while Karonis won over Maria Nivia 6-1, 6-1. Lang fell 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 to Miloslava Shustova, and Rachel Denny defeated Wischer 6-1, 6-2. Kelemen lost to April Kerr 6-2, 6-4. Nini Sujahvili defeated Reber 6-2, 6-3, and Waites dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 decision to Amanda Moccia.
Play continues at the West Hills Athletic Club Saturday, with the Cyclones facing DePaul in doubles and Indiana in singles.
