Cyclone Notebook
- Iowa State returns to the friendly confines of Hilton Coliseum with a 5-1 record after picking up wins against Virginia and TCU at the Paradise Jam. The Cyclones' lone loss came to No. 10 West Virginia in the championship game at the tournament.
- The Cyclones will face Michigan in the 2010 Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
- This marks the seventh season in a row that the Cyclones have started 5-1.
- Iowa State placed Kelsey Bolte and Hallie Christofferson on the all-tournament team at the Paradise Jam. Bolte averaged 15.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in the three games, while hitting 48.6 percent (17-35) from the field. Christofferson averaged 8.7 points and 5.3 rebounds at the tournament.
- Lauren Mansfield wasn't included on the team, but the junior posted an impressive week averaging 12.0 points and 5.3 assists. Mansfield led the Cyclones in their win over TCU, hitting six 3-pointers. With Iowa State trailing by seven, Mansfield hit 3-pointers on four-straight possessions to put the Cyclones up five.
- Mansfield is leading the Big 12 and ranks ninth in the country with 6.5 assists per game.
- The Cyclones have been solid defensively, holding their first six opponents to 30.5 percent shooting from the field, which ranks eighth in the country.
- The Cyclones have outrebounded their first six opponents by 5.7 boards per game. Taking out the West Virginia game, which saw the Cyclones outrebounded by 18, ISU has held a 10.4 edge on the glass.
- Iowa State is 3-1 thus far in a stretch that sees it face six-straight teams that advanced to the postseason in 2009-10. The Cyclones still have games against Michigan and Iowa remaining in the tough stretch.
- Iowa State has won 51 straight regular-season non-conference contests at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones have not lost a regular-season non-conference game at home since the 2003-04 season (Washington).
- Since Fennelly's arrival, Iowa State is 202-34 (.856) in games played at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones have never lost more than five home games in a season under Fennelly.
- The Cyclones have an overall record of 575-503 (.533) and are 287-140 (.672) all-time at Hilton Coliseum.
- ISU has made 11 trips to the NCAA Championships and is one of just 20 teams to boast four straight NCAA berths, and one of just five squads to make the NCAA Sweet 16 in the last two seasons. Iowa State also has a pair of Elite Eight berths.
- ISU has finished in the top four of the Big 12 final standings in four of the last six campaigns, and Iowa State is tied with Texas Tech for the second-best conference record in Big 12 history (139-85).
A Closer Look at Michigan
- Michigan is 4-3 this season with its three losses coming at the hands of No. 4 Xavier, No. 7 Texas A&M and Marquette, which is receiving votes in the coaches' poll.
- The Wolverines, who advanced to the semifinals of the NIT in 2009-10, return three starters, including guard Veronica Hicks, guard/forward Carmen Reynolds and guard Jenny Ryan.
- The Wolverines shot 66 percent (33-for-50) from the field in a 91-58 win over Wake Forest Wednesday, including 52.5 percent (12-for-23) from behind the arc.
- Carmen Reynolds led the Wolverines in the win, pouring in a season-high 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Reynolds was 5-for-8 from 3-point land and 4-for-4 from the free throw line in 29 minutes.
- Rachel Sheffer (15), Veronica Hicks (13) and Nya Jordan (11) also reached double-digits for the Wolverines, who scored 51 points in the second half.
- Hicks leads the Wolverines with 11.0 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per game. Hicks has also dished out a team-high 27 assists this season. The 5-9 Ryan is Michigan's leading rebounder, grabbing 5.3 rebounds a game.
- Michigan shoots 47.9 percent from the floor and 35.6 percent from behind the arc.
- Michigan has taken 163 3-pointers this season, an average of 23.3 per game. The Wolverines connect on 8.3 threes a game.
- Kevin Borseth is in his fourth season at the helm of the Michigan program. Borseth is 495-207 as a head coach at the NCAA level, including 54-51 at Michigan.
Series Notes
- The Cyclones hold a 2-0 edge in the all-time series, with one win coming on the road and another at the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament in 2007.
- In the last meeting between the two schools, Alison Lacey hit nine 3-pointers on 13 attempts as Iowa State defeated Michigan 67-43. The win was the 499th in the program's history. Kelsey Bolte is the only ISU player that has faced Michigan.
- Iowa State is 45-43 all-time against Big Ten schools.
Mansfield's Heroics
- Mansfield scored 20 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists against TCU. Her big night was highlighted by a four-minute stretch in the game in which Mansfield single-handedly took the Cyclones from down seven (43-50) to up five (55-50) by knocking down 3-pointers on four-straight possessions.
The Cyclones went on to win the game 64-59, with Mansfield hitting on 6-of-7 3-pointers.
