Cyclones Open Season at Metrodome Softball Classic

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team opens its 2010 season Friday when it travels to the Metrodome Softball Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. The Cyclones will face Arkansas, Drake, Iowa, Western Illinois and the host Minnesota, twice.

? The Iowa State softball team opens its 37th season and 55-game regular season schedule Friday when it travels to Minneapolis, Minn. to play in the Metrodome Tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota.
? ISU head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler returns for her fifth season at the helm. Gemeinhardt-Cesler is 91-101 (.474) at ISU and 244-177 (.580) in eight seasons as a collegiate head coach.
? The Cyclones, who went 26-29 last year, will face Drake, Iowa, Western Illinois, Arkansas and the host Gophers (twice).
? ISU has a long history against Drake (64-15 all-time against the Bulldogs), Iowa (36-32-1) and Minnesota (29-38). The Cyclones have faced WIU (16-6-1) in each of the last five years but will be facing Arkansas for the first time in school history.
? Iowa State is 10-8 in season opening tournament under Gemeinhardt-Cesler, including 7-1 in the last two years.
? ISU was the second-hottest team in the Big 12 the final half of last season, going 6-3 in league games. The Cyclones finished with a school-record seven conference wins (7-11).
? The Cyclones return all starters from last year's team, including a five-player senior class that has played in 766 games.
? Catcher Alex Johnson and pitcher Rachel Zabriskie return after earning All-Big 12 second team honors a year ago.
? Johnson, who hit .258 with seven homers in 2009, sits just three RBI shy of tying the school record of 104, which is held by Ashley Killeen (2004-07).
? Zabriskie returns for her junior year after logging over 70% of the team's innings last spring. She finished the season 18-24 with 219 strikeouts, which ranked second among Big 12 hurlers.
? The team's leading hitter, Courtney Wray returns after missing the final eight games of the 2009 campaign with a broken wrist. Wray hit a team-best .301 before suffering the season-ending injury.
? Carleigh Berry, who was second on the team with a .286 average, returns after starting 47 games last year.
? Berry is a legitimate threat to steal when she gets on base. The junior has 28 career stolen bases, just 20 shy of the school record of 48 set by Adi Blackmon (2000-03).
? Among the other returnees are Amanda Bradberry (second base), Sydni Jones (first base), Kelsey Kidwell (centerfield) and Carrie Monroe (shortstop).
? Bradberry hit .414 over the final 10 games of the season last spring and was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team, but the senior had offseason surgery on her hamstring. She has recovered from the surgery and is available for this weekend's games.
? Jones hit .241 and is second among active players with 15 career homers.
? Kidwell is expected to start in centerfield for the third season in a row. The senior hit .280 last season, leading the team with 53 hits.
? Monroe has anchored the starting spot at shortstop the last two seasons, hitting .235 in 2009. She drove in 18 runs for the Cyclones last spring.
? The sophomore duo of Heidi Kidwell and Bianca Lopez played well at the end of last season, hitting .277 and .256 in Big 12 play.
