NORMAN, Okla.?The No. 16 Iowa State gymnastics team more than held its own at No. 1 Oklahoma Friday evening, as the Cyclones delivered their highest score (196.225) this season. OU answered ISU's upset bid with a season-high score in its 197.250-196.225 victory at the Lloyd Noble Center in front 1,775 fans at the Sooners' Beauty and the Beast event where OU gymnastics and wrestling competed simultaneously. Iowa State dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12.
In addition to posting its season-best score, the Cyclones registered at least a 49.000 on each of the four events for the first time this season. Adding to Iowa State's strong showing was the fact the Cyclones had a make-shift lineup as all-arounder Jody McKellar was only able to compete on bars due to an ankle injury sustained last week.
“I am really proud of the effort our team put out tonight,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We could have potentially struggled tonight with some of our key gymnasts out of lineups, but we came together and delivered a great performance.”
Iowa State's Michelle Browning won the all-around, scoring a career-high 39.275.
"Michelle is really coming into her own and showing the type of gymnast she really is," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. "Michelle is a national-level-caliber gymnast, and it is great to see her illustrate that at a meet of this level."
The Cyclones started off strong on bars, notching a season-high 49.000 on the event. Ashley Kent (9.825) and Browning (9.800) both tied their season high on the event. Jacquelyn Holmes and McKellar each scored a 9.800. After the first rotation, the Sooners led 49.200-49.000.
For its second event, Iowa State scored another season high with a 49.050 on vault. Ceilia Maccani led the Cyclones with a career-high-tying 9.850. Browning tied her season best with 9.825 and Shea Anderson also delivered a 9.825. Oklahoma had a stellar bars performance, scoring a 49.425 as three Sooners scored 9.900 or higher. At the midway point, Oklahoma led 98.625-98.050.
Iowa State put together a solid floor performance with a 49.000. Celine Paulus (9.850) and Melanie Tham (9.800) each tied career highs on the event. Browning and Anna Robey both scored a 9.800. The Sooners briefly opened the door for a comeback, as Oklahoma's first gymnast on beam fell. However, the next five Sooners were outstanding, making it so OU did not have to count the fall. With one event remaining, Oklahoma led 148.000-147.050.
Ranked No. 9 in the country on beam, Iowa State closed the meet on the event with its best tally of the campaign with a 49.175. The 12th-ranked beam worker in the country, Kent delivered her best score of the year with a 9.875 to conclude the competition. Paulus closed her stellar night with a career-high-tying 9.850, while Browning set her best mark in 2010 at 9.850. Maccani (9.800) and Tham (9.800) rounded out the ISU beam performance.
The Cyclones head to Iowa City for a Feb. 21 meet against Iowa at 2 p.m. Should Iowa State win the contest, the Cyclones will clinch the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series trophy.
