LINCOLN, Neb. ? The 13th-ranked Iowa State women's basketball team put up a valiant fight without leading scorer Alison Lacey, but the third-ranked Nebraska Huskers were too much as they earned a 60-50 win over ISU Wednesday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Cyclones dropped to 19-5 overall and 7-4 in the Big 12, while Nebraska improved on their perfect season for a 24-0 record.
The Cyclones were without leading scorer and point guard Lacey after she suffered a minor concussion in practice on Tuesday before leaving for Nebraska. Kelsey Bolte led the Cyclones with four three-pointers and 15 points. Freshman Jessica Schroll scored a career-high 14 points, including the final seven points of the game. Anna Prins pitched in nine points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds. Chelsea Poppens also grabbed seven boards for ISU.
Iowa State shot 52.4 percent from the field and drained seven three-pointers in the second half, including three by Bolte. The Cyclones finished the game with a 40.9 percent shooting mark for the conteset and a 10-for-24 effort from outside the arc. Iowa State crushed the Huskers on the boards with a 34-24 advantage. Nebraska shot 38.3 percent from the field and was 5-for-22 from long range. The Huskers had three players finish in double figures, led by freshman Lindsey Moore, who hit four treys and scored 18 points. Cory Montgomery scored 16 and Kelsey Griffin finished with a doubled-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for NU.
The Iowa State offense was flustered for the first nine minutes of the contest, trailing 12-5, before a few shots began to fall for the Cyclones. Prins scored four straight points for ISU, Schroll got two and Denae Stuckey drained a three-pointer to tie the score at 14-all with seven and a half minutes left in the half.
ISU took its first lead when the Cyclones broke the NU press and found Bolte in transition for a wide open three-pointer to give ISU a 17-16 advantage. Nebraska answered with a score before Schroll got a putback for ISU's final points of the half with a 19-18 lead. Montgomery scored Nebraska's final seven points of the period and Schroll hit an amazing three-point shot at the buzzer that was called off by the officials to give Nebraska a 27-19 lead at the break.
The Huskers held the Cyclones to 30.4 percent shooting and a 3-for-10 effort from beyond the arc in the half. Iowa State, however, held a 20-11 edge on the glass and the ISU defense held NU to 39.1 percent shooting and just one three-pointer. The Huskers went 8-for-9 from the charity stripe and ISU committed 11 first-half turnovers.
The Cyclones got three-pointers by Prins and Whitney Williams and Bolte got a traditional three-point play to cut the margin to three, 31-28, to start the second half. Prins got another field goal and Schroll hit a free-throw to make it a two-point NU margin, 33-31. Bolte drained another three-pointer to get within three points again, 37-34.
Nebraska went on a 12-3 run from there that included a pair of Moore three-pointers to push the Huskers ahead 49-37 with 7:21 to go in the game. The Cyclones got back-to-back treys by Amanda Zimmerman and Bolte to cut the margin back to six, 49-43, but Nebraska answered with a three-pointer by Montgomery and a steal and layup by Yvonne Turner to push Nebraska back up by 11.
Schroll scored ISU's final seven points, including the first trey of her career, as Iowa State cut it to seven, 57-50. The Cyclones were forced to foul and the Huskers hit enough free throws to keep ISU from completing the comeback.
Iowa State will return to Hilton Coliseum for a rematch with Missouri at 7 p.m. Saturday.
