IOWA CITY, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision against intrastate rival Iowa at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Sunday for the 10th event of the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. The Cyclones fell to 5-3 overall this season.
"It was a disappointing loss," Espinosa said. "Certainly the score does not reflect how tight some of the matches were. We just really have to take our opportunities and run with them. We didn't capitalize when we could have, which cost us certain points here and there, which adds up to games and the match."
In No. 1 singles, Erin Karonis suffered her third loss of the season against 87th-ranked Sonja Molnar, falling 6-3, 6-2. Maria Macedo lost her first set against Lynne Poggensee-Wei, but came back to win the second set, 6-2, sending the pair to a tiebreaker in place of the third set. Macedo failed to capitalize, dropping the tiebreaker 10-8. Tessa Lang fell to Merel Beelen 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 3 slot. Freshman Jenna Langhorst lost her first set to Jessica Young 6-4, before coming back to win 6-4 in the second. Young earned a 6-3 win in the third set to decide the match for the Hawkeyes. Liza Wischer suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Iowa's Kelcie Klockenga, while Marie-Christine Chartier lost 6-3, 6-3 to Alexis Dorr.
