ATHENS, Ga. - No. 8 Georgia used four extra-base hits and a one-hitter from Erin Arevalo to defeat Iowa State, 8-0, Friday afternoon at the seventh annual Georgia Softball Classic. With the loss, ISU dips below .500 at 6-7 this season.
Player of the year candidate Taylor Schlopy got the Bulldogs (9-1) on the board in the first. Schlopy drew a leadoff walk, stole second and later came in to score on a wild pitch by ISU pitcher Lauren Kennewell.
The Cyclones threatened to tie it in the top of the third, but a double play ended the effort.
Bianca Lopez opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch, her second in as many games. After Lopez moved to second on a Carrie Monroe sacrifice bunt, Carleigh Berry singled to move Lopez up to third. Berry then stole second to give ISU runners at second and third with just one out, but Heidi Kidwell lined into a first-to-third double play to thwart the rally.
The Bulldogs made the Cyclones pay in the bottom of the third, putting up a crooked number in their half of the third to break open the close game. Georgia had four hits, including two doubles and a homer, to put five runs on the board.
Megan Wiggins was responsible for the home run, which was her first of the season. Brianna Hesson and Kristyn Sandberg recorded the run-scoring doubles for the Bulldogs.
Hesson got to Kennewell again in the fourth, singling to score Ashley Pauly to make it 7-0.
The Bulldogs would end it with their eighth run an inning later as pinch Macie Couey scored on an error by the Cyclones.
Kennewell (0-2) took the loss for the Cyclones despite a career-high six strikeouts.
Georgia's Arevalo (4-1) got the win, allowing just one hit and striking out nine.
Berry's stolen base was the 31st of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth all-time at ISU.
The Cyclones will continue tournament play Saturday at 11:15 a.m.
