Cyclones.com talked to fifth-year Iowa State head softball coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler and over the next five days we'll be breaking down the upcoming season.
AMES, Iowa ? Each new season brings excitement and hope to teams around the nation and it isn't any different for Iowa State.
The Cyclones enter their 37th season with aspirations of earning the school's first NCAA Tournament berth since 1988.
That sense of hope stems from a number of things, including the return of all starters from a team that finished strong in 2009. Over the final half of last season, ISU was the second-best team in the Big 12 going 6-3, which was second only to league champion Oklahoma.
Five seniors with 766 combined games played will lead the charge for the Cyclones, who finished 26-29 overall and set a school-record going 7-11 in Big 12 play last season.
ISU will play 24 games against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The Cyclones open the season this weekend (Feb. 12-14) at the Metrodome Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn.
The tournament will feature games against Arkansas, Drake, Iowa, Western Illinois and host Minnesota.
In the first installment of “Talking Softball with Gemeinhardt-Cesler” we'll talk about the overall outlook on the season with the fifth-year head coach, including what she looked for when putting together the schedule and what the team needs to focus on to reach their goals for this season.
