AMES, Iowa- After picking up two Big 12 Conference wins over the weekend, the Iowa State tennis team is ranked No. 66 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) this week.
"Our ranking is certainly a result of the matches this weekend, but it's really more so the result of the whole season," Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. "The team hasn't taken any bad losses and the teams we've lost to so far have been in the rankings at some point in time this season. That just really tells you that our strength of schedule is really paying off as well as the work of our student-athletes."
After defeating Missouri, 4-3, and No. 52 Colorado, 5-2, over the weekend, the 7-6 Cyclones have already posted their best conference record (2-1) since the formation of the Big 12.
"Coming out and beating the No. 52 team in the country certainly has propelled us to where we are now," Espinosa said."We just need to continue to beat the teams we are supposed to beat and not take any bad losses to maintain that number."
Iowa State will play two home matches on Thursday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The Cyclones will face Cleveland State at 9 a.m. and South Dakota at 2 p.m.
