LAWRENCE, Kan.- Despite a valiant effort, the Iowa State tennis team suffered its second Big 12 Conference loss of the season, falling 4-3 at Kansas, putting the Cyclones at 9-7 for the season and 2-2 in the league.
Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer picked up the first win for ISU, picking off Sara Lazarevic and Maria Martinez, 8-2, in No. 3 doubles. Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhors fell 8-3 to Ekaterina Morozova and Erin Wilbert before Maria Macedo and Tessa Lang topped Kunigunda Dorn and Victoria Khanevskaya, 8-6, to earn the doubles point for the Cyclones.
Lang picked up the Cyclone's first singles point of the day, defeating Martinez, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 3 slot. Marie-Christine Chartier fell, 6-3, 6-3, to Wilbert in straight sets as the Jayhawk's Morozova defeated Karonis 6-4, 6-2 and Dorn took down Langhorst, 6-4, 6-4.
In the No. 6 singles position, Wischer fell 6-3 in her first set against Jayhawk Khanevskaya, before coming back to win the second and third sets (6-2, 6-2), to pick up her third win against Big 12 Conference opponents this season. Macedo won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-1, against Lazarevic before dropping the second set 6-3. The third set again went to a tiebreaker, which Macedo dropped (7-4).
Iowa State tennis will travel to Manhattan, Kan., Sunday to face the Kansas State Wildcats at 1 p.m.
