NEW YORK ? Iowa State senior Alison Lacey has been invited to attend the WNBA Draft presented by adidas on Thursday, April 8, at the NBA Entertainment studios in Secaucus, N.J. The draft's first round will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPN360.com at 2 p.m. CST, while ESPNU and NBA TV will broadcast the second and third rounds.
Lacey is one of 14 players invited to attend the 2010 WNBA Draft and she is the first player in Iowa State history to attend the show.
“Never in a million years would I have thought that I would be drafted or one of 14 people picked to go to draft,” Lacey said. “It is shocking that it is actually happening. Just to be mentioned with the people that will be at the draft is surreal. If you would have told me back in Australia that this would have happened there is no way I would have believed it.”
The Canberra, Australia, native will be the eighth player in ISU history to be drafted into the WNBA and the first since Lyndsey Medders was chosen as Iowa State's top pick at No. 22 in 2007. Lacey will be joined at the draft by fellow Big 12 student-athletes Kelsey Griffin (Nebraska), Andrea Riley (Oklahoma State), Amanda Thompson (Oklahoma) and Danielle McCray (Kansas).
“I feel nervous, but I am excited to go to New Jersey,” Lacey said. “I am excited to experience all of these things. Rene? Brown (the WNBA's Chief of Basketball Operations and Player Relations) called me yesterday and told me what was going to happen and that made me even more excited.”
Lacey will leave for New Jersey on Wednesday morning along with ISU head coach Bill Fennelly, assistant coach Jodi Steyer and student assistant coach and Lacey's roommate Brittany Lange. The trip will be packed with meetings, interviews and special appearances for Lacey.
