LOS ANGELES, Calif.?Iowa State sophomore gymnast Michelle Browning became the first Cyclone to earn a place at the NCAA Championships since All-America honoree Janet Anson in 2007 with a 39.150 all-around performance Saturday evening at the NCAA Regional meet. The 17th-ranked ISU gymnastics team had an up-and-down performance that culminated in a fourth-place showing at the six-team meet with a team score of 194.325. UCLA won the event with a 197.825, Arkansas placed second (196.675), Arizona took third with a score of 195.100, Arizona State finished fifth (193.900) and Brigham Young rounded out the competition with a 193.400.
Browning earned her trip to the April 22-24 NCAA Championships in Gainesville, Fla., by being the top all-arounder from a team that did not qualify for the NCAA Championships. In addition to competing in the all-around, Browning will vie for an NCAA title on all four events.
“I can't put into words how excited I am that Michelle is going to nationals,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “I've been telling her that she has the potential to be one of the best in the country since I was recruiting her. This is another step toward proving that to her.”
Iowa State struggled on vault, its opening event, en route to a 47.725. Browning led the Cyclones with a 9.750. Arkansas led after the event, posting a 49.125 on floor, as the Cyclones started in fourth. ISU was on a bye for its second rotation.
On the third rotation Iowa State was in strong form, posting a 48.925 on bars. Browning delivered a career-high-tying 9.825, and Ashley Kent also scored 9.825 on the event. Jody McKellar and Ceilia Maccani each scored 9.775, while Megan Barnes notched a 9.725. At the conclusion of the third rotation, Iowa State stood in sixth with a 96.650. UCLA led with a 98.975.
The Cyclones moved to beam for on the fourth rotation and scored 48.550. Kent continued her strong night as she closed out her career with a 9.825 on the event. Browning added another solid effort to her meet, scoring a 9.725. In addition to Kent, Maccani and Barnes concluded their Cyclone careers on beam.
ISU closed out the competition with a poised performance scoring 49.125 on floor, as the five scoring Cyclone gymnasts all scored 9.800 or higher. Browning and Celine Paulus led Iowa State with scores of 9.850. Freshman Rebecca Ellis tallied a career-best 9.825, while fellow freshman Elizabeth Stranahan tied her career mark with a 9.800. Senior Anna Robey closed out her Cyclone career with a 9.800 tally on the floor.
“I felt like we started off poorly, and we were able to pull together a great second rotation on bars,” Ronayne said. “Going into the last two rotations for us, we made it clear to the team that we had nothing to hold back, and they let it all fly on the last two events, especially floor. I felt like we were in fifth or sixth place going into floor, and I was incredibly proud of the team to fight to pull themselves into fourth.”
