AMES, Iowa- After making its best Big 12 Conference finish this season, the Iowa State tennis team was ranked ninth in the final ITA central division rankings released this week, its highest team ranking since at least the 2001-02 season.
"I'm really proud of the team for getting in the top 10 for the region," Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said. "We are right there with the other teams that are top 75 in the country, so if we can improve our regional ranking each year, that's only going to help us on the national scene.
"In the next two seasons, we will have the opportunity to play every single team that is ranked ahead of us in the region. I think that gives us the opportunity to get better and improve our national ranking."
Junior Erin Karonis, who wrapped her season up with a 12-12 mark in the No. 1 singles slot, also earned a 14th-place ranking for her efforts, also the best individual ranking for a Cyclone since at least the 2001-02 season.
"Erin struggled a little bit at the very beginning of the season, but then finished the year really well, beating some people that are ranked ahead of her," Espinosa said. "I think if she has a good fall, she has a shot at getting into the national rankings."
