AMES, Iowa - When Iowa State assistant softball coach Jamie Pinkerton accepted a position on the USA Futures' coaching staff for the summer of 2010, he figured it would be rewarding. The experience may have been even more rewarding than he expected.
"It was such an incredible experience for me," said Pinkerton, who recently wrapped up his first season on Iowa State head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler's staff. "Having the opportunity to put on the colors of the United States of America was something I will never forget."
Pinkerton served as an assistant with Mike Larabee (Arkansas) on head coach Kate Drohan's (Northwestern) staff, working with some of the best softball players in the world. Pinkerton and the team trained early in the summer in Canton, Ohio, before heading to the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, Okla., last month.
"Being able to see how an elite player like Megan Langenfield and Stacey Nelson train on a day-to-day basis was extremely beneficial," said Pinkerton. "I feel like I was able to pick up some things that I can bring back to Iowa State to help our program."
The team went 3-4 at the event, winning games over Canada (twice) and Japan, which won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The third-place finish by the team was its best in the five-year history of the event.
"The team really played well and represented the USA in a first-class manner," said Pinkerton. "There are some very talented softball players involved with the USA Softball program, and it was a dream come true to be a part of it."
