AMES, Iowa—The No. 23 Iowa State gymnastics team was consistent all night Friday against 11th-ranked Nebraska, as the Cyclones did not have a single gymnast fall. Conversely, the Cornhuskers had three gymnasts fall, but did not have to count one of their missteps en route to a 195.450-194.725 win in both teams' Big 12 Conference opener.
In addition to improving its overall team score by over a point from its first meet of the year, Iowa State increased its tally on all four events from its season debut.
“We showed improvement this week,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “Last week we started poorly on vault, and we improved on that event this week which gives us a better chance to compete with strong teams. But, we still need to get a lot better, and I know we will as the season goes on. I am happy that we built off our first score of the year, and we will continue to build the whole season.”
Iowa State's Michelle Browning won her second all-around title of the season with a score of 39.125. Fellow Cyclone Michelle Shealy tied Browning for the beam title (9.825) with three other Nebraska gymnasts. Tying Browning and Shealy on beam were Maddie Steinauer, Emily Wong and Brittnee Habbib. Nebraska (1-1/1-0 Big 12) also earned titles on vault (Jamie Schleppenbach – 9.875), bars (Brittany Skinner – 9.825) and floor (Lora Evenstad – 9.875).
Iowa State (1-1/0-1 Big 12) freshman Camille Santerre-Gervias earned the meet's “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” which goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans. Gervais earned the award after scoring 9.800 on bars.
The Cyclones return to action Jan. 21 when Missouri travels to Hilton Coliseum. The meet is a part of Beauty and the Beast when the Cyclone gymnasts and wrestlers compete simultaneously, and it is set to begin at 7 p.m.
