AMES, Iowa - No. 20 Iowa State (15-5, 3-3 Big 12) got off to an 8-0 lead against the Missouri Tigers (10-11, 2-5 Big 12) and never looked back on Saturday, picking up its second-straight conference win, 71-56, in front of 10,820 at Hilton Coliseum.
Sophomore forward Chelsea Poppens recorded her sixth double-double of the year, grabbing a career-best 19 rebounds, including a personal-best 10 offensive boards, and adding 12 points. The 19 rebounds were the most by an Iowa State player since Angie Welle grabbed a school-record 23 against Colorado on Feb. 9, 2002.
Freshman Hallie Christofferson led the Cyclone offense, scoring 18 points on the day.
Coached by former Iowa State assistant coach Robin Pingeton, the Tigers did manage to do what no other league opponent had this season, holding senior Kelsey Bolte to 12 points. Entering the game, Bolte had scored 20 or more points in her last five games and in each of Iowa State's five conference games.
But in this game, Bolte got plenty of help. Lauren Mansfield was also in double-digits for the Cyclones, recording 14 points. Chassidy Cole dished out a career-high seven assists. Cole has 13 assists and no turnovers.
Down 20 at the break, Missouri climbed back within 11 with one minute left in regulation but it was too late for the Tigers who could not overcome 30.4 percent shooting in the first half and were out-rebounded by the Cyclones, 45-25.
Shakara Jones led Mizzou with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Christofferson led all scorers in the first half with 11 points as Iowa State connected on 51.7 percent of its shots to take a 39-19 lead into the locker room.
On Wednesday Feb. 2, the Cyclones are back at Hilton Coliseum to host Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. CST.
