AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team has finalized its spring 2012 schedule, head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler announced Thursday. The Cyclones regular season will begin on Feb. 11 against Valparaiso and wrap up against Oklahoma on May 13.
During the three-month regular season, the Cyclones will face 12 teams from last season's NCAA tournament and five College World Series teams including 2011 champion Arizona State. The four remaining College World Series teams on Iowa State's schedule are Big 12 rivals Baylor, Missouri, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
The Cyclones will kick off the season Feb. 11-12 at a tournament hosted by Northern Iowa, playing Valparaiso, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Western Illinois before traveling south to Arizona State Feb. 17-19 for five games. While in Tempe, Iowa State's slate will include teams from ASU, Illinois State and Iowa.
From Arizona State, the Cyclones will head to the Cathedral Classic hosted by Oregon State in Palm Springs, Calif. to play squads including 2011 tournament teams Fresno State, Pacific and San Diego State.
A trip to UTEP March 2-4 includes two first-time foes for Iowa State in Brown and the hosting Miners before the Cyclones visit Missouri State and Loyola-Marymount.
The non-conference schedule closes with a tournament at St. Mary's and a doubleheader at Creighton on March 21. Opponents and times for the St. Mary's tournament are yet to be determined.
Big 12 season brings a schedule change as the league will no longer play two game series but will stretch each series to three games to be played Friday through Sunday.
After opening conference play with Texas March 23-25, UNI and Drake come to Ames for one game each. The Cyclones finish March at Texas Tech.
In April, Texas A&M visits April 6-7 before Iowa State makes the short drive to Des Moines to play Drake on April 10 and goes to Stillwater, Okla. to play Oklahoma State April 13-15.
The Cyclones return home for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game with the Hawkeyes on April 18 but quickly hit the road again, this time to Kansas.
Home series against both Missouri and Oklahoma bookend a trip to Baylor with Iowa State's noon CDT game with the Sooners on May 13 concluding the regular season.
The NCAA tournament begins May 18 at selected sites.
