AMES, Iowa – Iowa State tennis is gearing up for its final fall tournament this weekend at the Western Michigan Invitational, which will kick off Friday in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Cyclones have four other tournaments under their belts so far this year, and the squad is hoping that its fifth competition of the off-season will bring clarity for what's to come in the spring.
“We've had some success so far, and hopefully this tournament will help us look at certain pairs and help us have a little clearer of an idea for what our teams will look like in the spring,” head coach Armando Espinosa said.
A travel party of eight will make the trek to Michigan beginning Thursday, and competition starts Friday morning and wraps up Sunday afternoon . The tournament is structured so that the Iowa State student-athletes will face opponents from the same school concurrently for singles and doubles. This mirrors how regular-season matches are organized, and Espinosa believes that the similarity will benefit Iowa State's rookies.
“We're taking the three freshmen (Meghan Cassens, Caroline Hauge Andersen and Ksenia Pronina) so that they can experience some of what they're going to look at in the spring,” Espinosa said. “Hopefully they'll get a little taste of what it's going to be like.”
The WMU Invitational will be Iowa State tennis' final fall challenge until action resumes in January at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational.
