AMES, Iowa? The No.25 Iowa State gymnastics team had to count a fall on balance beam, but the Cyclones did not let it derail them as they went on to score a season-best tally of 49.175 on floor on the next rotation. Iowa State's floor effort propelled the Cyclones to their season-best score of 195.375. No. 5 Oklahoma still proved to be too much, totaling its highest team tally of 2011 at 197.225 to win the Big 12 Conference competition Friday in Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State (6-2-1/1-2 Big 12) freshman Michelle Shealy earned her third-straight all-around title with a career-best score of 39.150. Oklahoma (9-0/2-0 Big 12) gymnasts Sara Stone (vault ? 9.875), Natasha Kelley (bars ? 9.950 and beam ? 9.925) and Sara Stone (floor ? 9.900) were the other event winners on the evening.
“We're making a lot of progress,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We've learned a lot the last couple of weeks about what it takes to be good. We need to learn to stay on the equipment to really put the finishing touches together. It was impressive for the team to come back after counting a fall on beam and have a great floor performance on the next rotation.”
In addition to Shealy's career best in the all-around, the Cyclones had a bevy of personal highs on the evening. Jody McKellar (bars ? 9.900), Camille Santerre-Gervais (bars - 9.850), Jacquelyn Holmes (beam ? 9.775), Hailey Johnson (floor ? 9.800) and Shealy (vault ? 9.775) all equaled or tallied career bests.
McKellar's effort on bars earned her the meet's “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” which goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans.
The Cyclones posted a near-season high on vault (48.750) as well as delivering their top effort of the year on floor. The Cyclones' floor effort saw every gymnast score 9.775 or higher on the event, highlighted by Michelle Browning's season-best 9.875. Jody McKellar (9.800) and Shea Anderson (9,800) paced Iowa State on vault, as McKellar tallied her best effort of the season on the apparatus.
The Cyclones next compete Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. when Iowa travels to Hilton Coliseum for a Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series matchup.
