NORMAN, Okla. - No. 11 Oklahoma made six free throws in the in the final 27 seconds to erase a determined Iowa State comeback led by the 23-point All-American effort of Kelsey Bolte and escape with a 65-62 win over No. 20 Iowa State Saturday in Lloyd Noble Arena. The win makes Oklahoma 7-2 in the Big 12 Conference and 17-5 overall. Iowa State falls to 16-6 and 4-4, suffering its first loss in four games. Iowa State plays at Kansas Wednesday at 7 p.m. CST.
Bolte banked in a three-point basket to put Iowa State ahead 60-59 with 2:25 left in the game. A putback underneath by Chelsea Poppins gave the Cyclones a 62-59 advantage with 58 seconds remaining, the last field goal of the game by either team. Iowa State could not score on its succeeding possessions. Four free throws by Sooner Danielle Robinson and two by Jasmine Hartman sealed Iowa State's fate. Iowa State had the ball under the OU basketball with eight seconds left but could not get off a final shot.
Bolte, who worked feverishly all game to get open for her game-high 23 points, also finished the contest with seven rebounds. She now 252 career three-pointers, ranking 10th in Big 12 Conference history. Christofferson added 14 points for the Cyclones. Robinson led OU with 20 points. Aaryn Ellenberg had 15 points for Oklahoma.
Trailing 38-24 at halftime and down 54-44 with 11:09 left in the game Iowa State battled back. The Cyclones tallied seven unanswered points in less than two minutes midway through the second half. Hallie Christofferson's layup closed the OU lead to 54-51 with 8:38 to go. Two free throws by Christofferson gave the Cyclones their first lead, 57-56 with 4:31 left in the game.
Iowa State out-rebounded Oklahoma, 38-26 but turned the ball over 24 times, 15 in the first half.
Oklahoma went on a 14-3 run in the last six minutes of the first half to break open a close game. Laura Mansfield had scored on a drive and got the foul and free throw to pull Iowa State within 29-23 with 2:30 left in the first half. But Oklahoma responded by raining a trio of three-point baskets, two by Ellenberg and the last by Carlee Roethlisberger to give OU a 38-24 advantage at the half.
