Softball Comes to the Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team opens its season this weekend, hosting the Cyclone Indoor Invitational, Friday Feb. 11 through Sunday Feb. 13 at the Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility. Teams from Creighton, Valparaiso, South Dakota State and Western Illinois will join the Cyclones for the weekend's action.
The Cyclones, who defeated Creighton (twice) and lost to Western Illinois last season, have not played South Dakota State since the 2008 season and have not faced Valparaiso since 2004.
Head Cyclones coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler has a revamped roster for 2011 after losing 11 letterwinners at the end of the 2010 season. Key returning players for Iowa State include 20-game winner Rachel Zabriskie who set a school record for strikeouts in a single season last year with 255. Zabriskie is atop the Iowa State record book for all-time wins and strikeouts, boasting 53 and 620, respectively.
At the plate, the Cyclones will look for outfielder Heidi Kidwell to continue to blister the ball after hitting a team-high .328 last year. Sophomore Erica Miller, who hit just under .300 as a freshman, will also be an integral part of Gemeinhardt-Cesler's lineup.
With 10 freshmen joining the squad this season, fans can expect to see plenty of new faces around the diamond. With the graduation of catcher Alex Johnson, Evan Folks will get her shot behind the plate this season while second baseman Sara Rice, Sara Davison and others will fill in the holes left by infield-standouts Courtney Wray and Sydni Jones. Pitcher Breeanna Holliday will see quality innings in an attempt to lessen Zabriskie's load of 227.2 innings from last year.
On Friday, Western Illinois and Creighton will take the field first at 2:30 p.m. CST with the Cyclones' season opener against Creighton set for 5 p.m. CST. Iowa State will finish the night against Western Illinois with a 7:30 p.m. CST scheduled first pitch.
Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to this weekend's games as there will be limited bleacher seating in the Bergstrom Indoor Facility.
