AMES, Iowa - The Cyclones softball team hits the road again this weekend. Iowa State will go to Tulsa, Okla. to the Holiday Inn Tulsa-City Center Festival to play Ohio State, host Tulsa, North Dakota and Drake on Friday and Saturday.
Iowa State (9-6) is coming off a trip to Charleston, S.C. where it went 3-2, falling by one run to both Notre Dame and Charleston. Despite picking up both losses last weekend, senior Rachel Zabriskie (4-3, 1 save) was almost lights-out in her four appearances, which included three starts. Zabriskie put up an ERA of 0.67 in the three day span, and, pitching the final two innings of the Cyclones' win over Drexel, struck out five. The staff ace allowed one earned run each against Notre Dame and Charleston but the Cyclones hit their own offensive walls in the games, falling 1-0 and 2-1, respectively.
Walks appear to be the early story of the season for Iowa State, both giving them up and working them at the plate. In their nine wins, the Cyclones have worked opposing pitchers for 52 walks, compared with 12 walks in their six losses. While walking more than three batters in a game has happened only three times this season, three has become the magic number early on. Iowa State is 8-4 when walking three or fewer batters and improves to 5-0 when two or fewer batters reach base on a walk.
Play on Friday begins at 12:15 p.m. CST against Ohio State and continues at 4:45 p.m. against Tulsa. Live stats for all this weekend's game can be found at the tournament central page linked above.
