AMES, Iowa - Tori Torrescano became the sixth Cyclone in Iowa State history to record at least 10 home runs in a single season Sunday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The Cyclones fell to No. 17 Baylor 10-1, dropping the Cyclones to 21-22 on the year and 3-9 in Big 12 play. The win improves Baylor to 37-12 overall with an 8-7 conference record.
Iowa State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Torrescano took Whitney Canion's (21-9) first pitch of the inning over the left-center field wall to make the score 2-1 in favor of Baylor. The solo shot was the left fielder's 10th home run of the season. Along with Erica Miller's 11 home runs on the season, it is the second time in school history that two Cyclones have recorded double-figure home run totals in a season, joining Lindsey Herrin (11) and Erica Martinez (10) in 2002.
The Bears were first on the board in the top of the third frame. Dani Leal reached base on a fielder's choice and was advanced to third on a Megan Turk double. The first run of the day came home when shortstop Sara Davison fumbled a Holly Holl grounder to make the score 1-0. Turk would come home the next at bat on a wild pitch by Cyclone starter Breeanna Holliday (3-3) to double the BU lead to 2-0.
The Bears added insurance runs in the top of the sixth as Clare Hosack led off the inning with a home run just over the right field wall to increase the Baylor lead to 3-1. It was Hosack's fifth homer of the season. After Holliday issued a walk to Canion, the Cyclones brought in Lauren Kennewell in relief. The first run of Kennewell's outing was plated by Kayce Walker via an RBI-single. Baylor made it 5-1 with an RBI-double from Leal that plated Walker.
Hosack put her second home run of the day over the fence in the top of the seventh with a two-run lined shot that just cleared the center field wall to make it 7-1 for the Bears. The visitors plated three more runs before Liz Paul entered to pitch a scoreless seventh to secure the Baylor win.
In her fourth start of the year, Holliday went five innings, allowing eight hits and only one earned run while walking two and fanning two. Canion threw six innings for the Bears, allowing four hits and one run while walking four and striking out eight.
The Cyclones return to action next weekend with a pair of Big 12 games at Oklahoma. The first game is Saturday at 2 p.m. CDT with the second game Sunday at noon CDT.
