AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team announced its team awards for the 2010-11 season with junior Maria Fernanda Macedo being named the Most Valuable Player.
Macedo, a Mexico City, Mexico native, went 18-12 in singles play while playing primarily in the No. 2 singles slot. She posted a 5-6 record against Big 12 opponents. Macedo also teamed with Tessa Lang at No. 1 doubles to post a 12-16 record.
"Maria had a good year playing both singles and doubles," head coach Armando Espinosa said. "In trying to prepare her for next year we moved her around a bit to give her experience at No. 1 singles, where she will probably play as a senior, and I thought she responded well. That can be a tough transition and I hope her confidence continues to grow heading into next year."
Freshman Emma Waites was named the team's Most Improved Player, garnering the honor after going 8-3 in singles play and 4-5 in doubles action. The Milton, Ga., native picked up dual victories over opponents from North Dakota and UMKC to go 2-0 in singles play this spring.
"Emma grew a lot as a player during her freshman year," Espinosa said. "She went from not traveling to seeing what she needed to do to give her a chance at playing. By the end of the season she did a great job coming through when she was called upon."
The Hardest Worker Award went to the senior duo of Erin Karonis and Liza Wischer.
Karonis, a native of Ivyland, Pa., finished her career as the school-record holder with 15 career conference wins. Her 100 career singles and doubles wins is the eighth-most in school history. Karonis spent her entire career playing No. 1 singles and posted 54 wins in the top slot.
As a senior, Karonis was 14-16 in singles action and 16-13 in doubles play while teaming with sophomore Simona Cacciuttolo.
Wischer ranks seventh in school history with 101 total wins, including 58 in singles play to rank fourth all time. This season, the Grand Forks, N.D., native posted a 12-15 singles record and was 8-16 in doubles. Wischer finished her career second all time with 14 Big 12 singles wins.
"Erin and Liza were very important to our program," Espinosa said. "The motivation they had as seniors in trying to help the program was significant. As coaches, we always knew what we were going to get out of them each day at practice and in competition. They worked hard all the time and that gave them a chance to really compete."
