Iowa State Advances After Day Two

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Iowa State tennis team finished off the second full day of competition at the Gopher Invitational today. The Cyclones enjoyed multiple singles and doubles wins, with one duo advancing to the championships.

Nikki Reber and Marie-Christine Chartier took out the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee pair Beth Ganzer and Kelly Fritz 8-1 in the third round. The sophomore and senior team went on to snag a 2-0 win from Missouri's Ashleigh Chiaf and Iowa's Cassandra Escobar due to their opponents retiring from injury. The duo will face Gustavus' Alex Erikson and Megan Born for the bracket title Sunday.

“Marie and Nikki have really outplayed their opponents when it comes to fundamentals,” Iowa Statehead coach Armando Espinosa said. “That's one of the reasons for their success as a pair.”

Chartier continued to impress in one-on-one action as well. She defeated Wisconsin's Aleksandra Markovic 6-4, 7-6 (7), setting the Quebec native up for a match against Iowa's Christina Harazin for the consolation bracket championship.

Chelsea Loprinzi, another Cyclone senior, had a commendable day on the court, defeating UWM's Beth Ganser 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the third round before falling to Jessie Bertino of Bradley. Loprinzi is set to face Emily Roediger of Gustavus for third-place finish on Sunday morning.

Tournament play will conclude tomorrow afternoon following doubles and singles championship matchups.
